Tutu: Bush and Blair Should Face Prosecution

On Sunday Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu stated in an op-ed piece for The Observer newspaper that Tony Blair and George Bush should face prosecution at the International Criminal Court for their role in the 2003 U.S. –led invasion of Iraq and “answer for their actions”.

Tutu said, “The Iraq war has destabilised and polarised the world to a greater extent than any other conflict in history. Those responsible for this suffering and loss of life should be treading the same path as some of their African and Asian peers who have been made to answer for their actions in The Hague.”

Since the beginning, Tutu has been very vocal about his criticism of the Iraq war but this is the first time that he has joined others in the opinion that Bush and Blair should face prosecution at The Hague, the first permanent war crimes tribunal.

While there has been no commentary from the United States or George Bush, Blair responded by saying that he was very respectful of everything Tutu has accomplished, but he was repeating inaccurate criticisms of the Iraq war.

“To repeat the old canard that we lied about the intelligence is completely wrong as every single independent analysis of the evidence has shown and to say that the fact that Saddam massacred hundreds of thousands of his citizens is irrelevant to the morality of removing him is bizarre,” Blair said.
