Reiki: Channelling the Energy of the Universe

Reiki

Reiki, pronounced Ray-Key, is one of the various alternative medicines available in the world today. Like acupuncture, Reiki originated in Asia as a method of healing the body naturally by channelling the Universal Life Force energy through the hands.

The Universal Life Force energy is known by many names across the world. In East  Asia it is known as Chi or Ki; in India, Prana; in Islamic countries, Barraka; and in science it has been identified as bioplasmic energy.

Reiki utilises this universal life force energy to naturally help the body self-heal. A Reiki practitioner will use the energetic laying-on-of-hands to convey this energy through themselves and into the recipient which will stimulate their ability to self-heal their body, mind and spirit. Those proficient in the art of Reiki are said to be able to help bring deep relaxation and peace to the recipients and add to the benefits of any other form of treatment should a recipient be ill.

This art of natural healing was first developed in Japan in 1922 by Usui Mikao; a successful businessman turned Tendai Buddhist. Usui became a monk after his career took a downward turn and he spent his time wondering and gaining knowledge about traditional healing techniques. He used these techniques when he created his own healing technique, Usui Reiki Ryoho, which means, the ‘Usui System of Natural Healing’.

Along with his healing techniques, Usui also developed the five basic precepts of Reiki which form the foundation by which one ‘lives’ in a state of balance with the universal life force energy.

At least for today:

  • Do not anger
  • Do not worry
  • With thankfulness
  • Work Diligently
  • Be kind to all living things

Since Usui created the system so many years ago, Reiki has since spread throughout the world becoming a popular and accepted form of holistic medicine. Reiki practitioners and patients alike swear by the effects of this spiritual art and say that it helps bring about balance and improves quality of life.
