Public Anger Could Halt Nkandla Plans

As news continues to come to light over the spending on President Jacob Zuma’s estate in Nkandla, as well as the scope of the project, public anger is simply growing and it doesn’t look like that anger will dissipate anytime soon.

So far it is unclear as to just how much is being spent on the estate. Public Works Minister, Thulas Nxesi, held a press conference on Friday to discuss the issue, however he refused to say how much is being spent and only disclosed that the upgrade was being determined by security assessments carried out by the security services. However, one claim says that the upgrade is going to cost between R203m and R230m rand, a claim based on documents leaked to the City Press newspaper.

While the Democratic Alliance has asked Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to investigate the matter, her office has blamed budgetary constraints for her lack of ability to do much else at the moment other than to contact the Presidency and ask for information.

So far it seems as though finding information on the Nkandla upgrade will be more difficult than wringing water from a stone, however, as public anger increases, the Presidency and the ANC may have little choice but to eventually give in and bring the information out into the open.
