New Police Commissioner Begs South Africa to Give Her a Chance

Riah Phiyega was recently appointed as police commissioner and has already faced large amounts of criticism for her perceived lack of policing experience. Gen Phiyega has responded by pleading with South Africans to give her a chance and judge her on her outcomes.

The job she has taken on is not an easy one. After her predecessors, Jackie Selebi and Bheki Cele were both dismissed from service; Gen Phiyega now has to prove that she is up to the task of eradicating corruption and boosting morale in the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Her appointment has been met with a mixed reaction across the board but it appears as though she isn’t letting this get her down. During her introduction to the media she said, “I’ve never been a police officer, but I want to say that you don’t need to be a drunkard to own a bottle store. I can learn…judge me in 12 months’ time on whether I have a poor learning capacity.”
