Largest-Ever 3D Map of the Universe (Video)

Released this week is the largest-ever 3D map of the universe created by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III, an association of over two dozen universities from around the world.

The group made use of a wide-angle optical telescope at New Mexico’s Apache Point Observatory to record the visible universe piece by piece. Once each piece was recorded, they are then pieced together.

In the video below you can view an animation which includes more than 400,000 galaxies, but the group’s findings can be explored more in depth at the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III website.
