Johannesburg Requests Miss World Pageant Probe

The City of Johannesburg has stated that the allegations of corruptions surrounding the hosting of the 2009 Miss World beauty pageant should be investigated.

Last week the mayoral committee held a meeting during which it was decided that if anyone should have evidence of wrongdoing, they should submit this information to the public protector. The municipality itself has sent a letter to the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela asking her to investigate the allegations.

The allegations raised come from recent questioning by the Democratic Alliance into the legality of the contracts the city entered into for the hosting of the Miss World competition in 2008 and 2009. There have also been questions into the city’s authority to bid and host the final of the 2009 event as well as the budgeting and buying of the rights for the pageant.

As well as requesting the public protector to investigate the matter, the city has launched its own investigation into the matter. Spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane said, “The city does not take these allegations lightly and wants to ensure that its reputation is not tarnished and that it continues to be and be seen as a world class African city able to attract reputable international events.”

The public protector’s spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi confirmed that the city’s request had been received.
