Is Social Media Ruining the Olympic Experience?

Twitter, Facebook and a wide range of other social media platforms have penetrated the daily lives of millions of people around the world. People have been afforded near constant access to information from almost anywhere at any time. Could this convenience be ruining the Olympic experience though?

The London Olympic Games has been heralded as the first “social media Olympic games”. It was highly anticipated that people would take to the platforms en masse and support their countries or debate results. With the convenience of these platforms though you can just look at your phone and find out who won a race that was run two seconds ago or find out what world record was just broken, all without ever having to tune in and watch the event.

Thanks to these days of instant gratification, some people feel that some of the excitement surrounding events like the Olympics is being lost and that sometimes being disconnected may just be best.
