Finalists and Winners Announced in National Geographic Photo Contest 2012

Photo Contest

The annual National Geographic Photo Contest is one of the biggest in the world. Judges had to comb through over 12, 000 entries this year to find their winners but it was definitely worth it as the results are amazing.

The first place prize went to Cedric Houin and his entry “Butterfly”. His photograph captures a slice of family life in remote Afghanistan with a woman and child inside a traditional yurt. Alexandra Avakian, a National Geographic photographer, said that the photograph was stunning because it captured the “traditional way of life and some of the modern accoutrements – the viewer gets the visual satisfaction of something that goes against cliché.”

Prizes for the contest ranged from a Galapagos photography expedition to $200 gift certificates at B&H photography. To view the winner’s images and some of the other brilliant entries, visit the National Geographic Photo Contest 2012 website.
