Discovering new tunes, the easy way

Kids may not believe it today, but not that long ago listening to the radio was the only way for many people to discover new music. Podcasts have made it that much easier.

These days there are thousands of podcasts to choose from across the web. Below are just a few of these which will not only introduce you to new music, but also includes discussions, interviews and live performances.

  • Soundcheck and New Sounds – Both daily shows are hosted by prolific host and music author, John Schaefer of WNYC. They cover a wide variety of music genres. New Sounds even has a specific theme for each show.
  • The Sound Opinions – A much more talk oriented show which also encompasses themes for each program.
  • Morning Becomes Eclectic – Features loads of decent quality in-studio concerts.
  • Radio Deluxe – The ideal podcast for jazz fans. While the sound quality could be improved, it will be acceptable for the average listener.
  • All Songs Considered – This show is the place to start for those looking for the newest music to hit the airwaves.
  • The Eternal Now – An eclectic podcast with experimental or psychedelic music which borders on “obscure”.
  • The Roadhouse – Blues, blues and more blues. The show also has an extensive archive for download, going back to 2005.
  • Is This Thing On? – An independent show which not only features music from signed artists, but the host, Nick Tann, also plays music sent in by listeners.
