Cosatu Calls Malema NUM Claims ‘Scandalous’
In the wake of allegations by expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema that NUM was not representing the interests of workers, Cosatu have hit back calling the claim “scandalous”.
Congress of SA Trade Unions spokesperson Patrick Craven said on Monday, “This is a scandalous insult to the mighty union… which for decades has been fearless and unflinching in its defence of the most exploited section of the South African working class.”
That National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is an affiliate of Cosatu.
Malema’s allegations came out during a speech he gave when visiting Marikana on Saturday. He said that the union was no longer representing the interests of the workers and the mineworkers need to form a “militant” union which would be more representative of their interests.
Craven said, “The federation deplores Malema’s blatant opportunism in seeking to exploit the understandable concerns of the Marikana workers to score cheap political points.”
