Australian Prime Minister Gives Scathing Speech on Sexism in Parliament [Video]

Julia Gillard

Australia’s first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, launched into an attack on sexism on Tuesday while trading vocal blows with opposition leader Tony Abbott in Parliament.

The video, captured by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, was uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday and begins with Gillard exclaiming that she will not be lectured about sexism and misogyny by Abbott before continuing to say that should he wish to know what misogyny looks like in modern Australia, “he needs a mirror.”

Her impassioned comments came after Abbott had demanded that Peter Slipper, the Speaker of the House, step down for sexually harassing an openly gay staff member. He then went on to imply that Gillard had defended Slipper and in that regard she was just as sexist.

Apart from calling Abbott a misogynist, Gillard went on to list a number of sexist and misogynistic remarks supposedly made by Abbott himself, toward women in general and herself specifically, even backing up her list with dates and times of said comments.
